The influential Republican Majority Leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, congratulated Democrat Joe Biden on winning the presidential election. McConnell spoke in the United States Senate after the electorate unequivocally confirmed Biden’s election victory on Monday.
“The electoral council has spoken. So today I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden, “McConnell said. He is considered a close confidant of outgoing US President Donald Trump and was one of the last high-ranking Republicans who had not yet officially admitted Biden’s victory.
Even US Attorney General William Barr had publicly denied Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated allegations of fraud and manipulation in the November elections in early December. Barr then submitted his resignation Monday. The president himself continues to present himself as the victim of massive electoral fraud.
Biden’s victory was made official Monday after 538 electoral representatives voted for the future president in all 50 US states and the capital district of Washington. Biden received, like Trump once in his victory over Hillary Clinton in 2016, 306 votes from the electorate, 270 were needed.
Final election results will be officially announced in Congress in Washington on January 6. Biden is due to be sworn in on January 20. On that day, Trump’s constitutional term ends automatically, even if he does not admit defeat.
Biden then appealed to Trump to acknowledge his electoral defeat. At the same time, he described Trump’s delaying maneuver, which has been going on for weeks, as an unprecedented attack on American democracy.
Congratulations from Russia and Mexico
After the electoral vote, Russian President Vladimir Putin also congratulated Biden for the first time. “I am ready for an exchange and a contact with you,” Putin said. He wished Biden “every success” and hoped that the United States and Russia could help “despite their differences” to solve many of the world’s problems.
Mexican President Manuel López Obrador joined in the congratulations on Tuesday, according to the Reuters news agency. López Obrador said he had sent a letter to Biden to congratulate him on the victory.
