Arizona comes as a surprise to Democrats: Presidential candidate Joe Biden is ahead of Donald Trump in the Southwestern state. Now it’s clear too: According to the American media, former astronaut Mark Kelly has won a Senate seat for Democrats in the traditionally Republican state.
According to Fox News and the New York Times, Kelly, 56, was able to take her seat from Republican Sen. Martha McSally.
Kelly said he was confident that after all the votes were counted “he will be successful in this mission,” before the media announced the preliminary results.
The Senate race has yet to be decided
Kelly’s success should give Democrats a boost in the still-open race for the Senate, the second House of Congress. Until now, the Senate has been dominated by Republicans with a majority of 53 out of 100 seats. While the entire House of Representatives was re-elected in addition to voting on the President, there were only 35 seats to choose from in the Senate.
Consequently, the results for six US states were still open. One of these seats, in the state of Georgia, will only be decided in a runoff in early January. The two independent candidates who did not stand for election this year are among the Democrats.

The Senate has an important role in America’s democracy: if the majority must go to the Democrats, these decisions of the future president of the United States can stop or support them.
