Universal released the movie “Trolls World Tour”, which was originally planned for cinema, directly digitally due to the Corona crisis. This turned out to be a great success, as in 3 weeks it took over 5 months of movie windows with the predecessor. Now Universal has licked the blood and generally wants to offer its films digitally for distribution parallel to the theatrical release, which, however, bothers movie operators. After AMC Theaters, the world’s largest cinema chain, announced a boycott, Cineworld is now following suit.
Cineworld represents the second largest cinema chain in the world and also includes the Regal brand. In a press release, Cineworld announced that Universal’s films would no longer be shown in its theaters worldwide if the Hollywood studio implemented the announced plans. Universal is especially criticized because the studio is aware of how much the film industry suffers economically from the crisis in the crown. In these times, removing one more thing from partners no longer has anything to do with good business practice.
Universal is accused of being the only studio to take advantage of the pandemic by offering movies for digital distribution directly. Although I personally think that Disney’s focus is not that far, Disney in the USA. For example, the US has already promoted Pixar’s current movie “Forward: It’s Nothing” to its own Disney + streaming platform.
Universal has yet to respond directly to AMC and Cineworld boycott announcements. I am excited to see how the situation unfolds.
