Union Berlin, a soccer Bundesliga club, has passed its last dress rehearsal with the partial return of its fans. In front of 4,500 fans, Köpenicker beat second division 1. FC Nürnberg 2-1 (0-0) on Saturday at their An der Alten Försterei stadium. The test match was the Union’s first home match with spectators in 188 days. On March 1, Berlin had faced VfL Wolfsburg (2-2) for the last time in front of their own crowd.

Marcus Ingvartsen (51./64. On penalty) scored for the Union against Nuremberg, while Nikola Dovedan (52.) equalized. The return of spectators was made possible by the new Crown regulation of the state of Berlin, which has allowed outdoor events with up to 5,000 visitors since September 1. According to the head of hygiene Denis Hedeler, who was in the stadium during the match, Union “hygiene-relevant requirements implemented in an excellent way“. He was”particularly impressed“from the fans”,who take the necessary measures and comply with hygiene standards“.

Test run of the Bundesliga in two ways

Like all Bundesliga clubs, Union Berlin, whose stadium seats 22,012, is aiming for a league start with spectators in two weeks. The number of fans currently supported differs greatly from state to state. Politicians insist on a uniform solution by the end of October.

For the Nuremberg match, personalized tickets were raffled off among club members. Lottery winners had to wear a mask; however, they were allowed to remove the protection from their mouth and nose in the allotted space, maintaining the minimum distance. Union also wants to act in a similar way for the first Bundesliga game on September 19 against FC Augsburg, when up to 5000 spectators are expected again. Before that, the Berliners will travel to the second division Karlsruher SC next Saturday (6:30 pm) in the first round of the DFB Cup.

Andreas Luthe saves Union from being left behind

In sporting terms, Union made people sit down and notice twice in the first half, otherwise little came out of either team early on. Christian Gentner (14th) and Grischa Prömel (20th) missed with good chances against Nuremberg goalkeeper Christian Mathenia. After the break, the guests became more dangerous and had a double chance through Pascal Köpke and Johannes Geis (50th), but the new Berlin goalkeeper Andreas Luthe was on the post. After falling behind twice, the Franks didn’t give up and kept running, although Union had more involvement in the game.
