Due to the corona pandemic, schoolchildren will likely start the Christmas break even earlier. The federal government wants it to be brought forward to December 16, two more days ahead of schedule.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Lower Saxony state government announced that December 18 would be the last day of school in the state. In the evening it was announced that the students could probably go on vacation two days earlier. The corresponding draft for Wednesday’s federal-state consultations had been updated, he said. Consequently, the Christmas holidays will be brought forward to December 16 throughout Germany.
Last day of school originally December 22
In the case of cold symptoms before the holidays, there should also be a more generous trial offer to make gatherings around Christmas time as safe as possible. According to the vacation planner, Tuesday, December 22, would have been the last regular day of school this year. As of current status, classes will begin on Monday, January 11 after the break.
Minister of Education so far against extension
For a long time, Lower Saxony opposed an earlier start to the Christmas holidays. Education Minister Grand Hendrik Tonne (SPD) examined a student’s proposal in late October and rejected it. At that time there was the idea of leaving students at home from Friday and supervising them in homeschooling on Mondays and Tuesdays. The aim was to reduce the contacts and, therefore, the risk of contagion from children and adolescents long before Christmas to protect older relatives.
