This television duel was not enough for Trump
| Reading time: 3 minutes
Taking the previous television match as a point of reference, this time Trump looked significantly better. Still, he couldn’t convince. However, a big mistake by Joe Biden plays into his hands.
GRAMCompared to the disaster of the first television match, the last of the two presidential candidates was a success. Donald Trump did not flip over his opponent like a bulldozer every time he spoke. The president did not leave early either, as he did recently during an interview with the television program “60 Minutes.”
And contrary to what many had feared, Trump treated the black moderator with respect. Together, it allowed for a much more topic-oriented debate. The only question is: will that help Donald Trump catch up with his huge deficit in the polls?
In fact, the view of gigantic events like this latest TV showdown is now skewed by the curse of low expectations when it comes to Trump. Just because he didn’t act crazy this time doesn’t mean he was able to score. The president again launched a series of lies, much more than his opponent. And defending his coronation policy is nearly impossible given the more than 220,000 deaths in the United States and Trump’s chaotic handling of the crisis. Trump’s slogans to persevere range from shameful to cynical.
The most important point for Trump was provided by Biden
Even with his attacks on Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden, Trump really didn’t make it through. They were incoherent, and Trump was never able to get to the heart of what was supposedly so corrupt about Biden’s deals in Ukraine and China. If it were a crime to use personal contacts with politicians, family members, or others in a professional manner, most of the lobbying industry in Washington would be in jail.
The biggest point for Trump, on the other hand, came from Biden when he announced that he wanted out of the oil industry. That really should go down badly with many voters. It’s not as big a misstep as Hillary Clinton’s disparaging comment on Trump fans, which she dismissively dismissed as “a basket of pathetic figures.” However, in the 12 days leading up to the election, Republicans will try to squeeze in this comment as much as possible to get swing voters on their side.
The only problem for Trump is that there aren’t as many swing voters in this race anymore. Nearly 50 million US citizens have already cast their vote, by mail or by taking advantage of the early voting option at the polls. And more than 95 percent of voters said in most polls before the last match that they had already decided on a candidate and could no longer be deterred. Given Trump’s huge deficit, it would have taken a superlative performance to change course.
However, he did not succeed. Several representative polls after the television match saw Biden as the clear winner. Although these snapshots are not considered especially reliable after television debates, the trend remains clear: this duel was not enough to re-shuffle the cards. And that helps Biden. You just have to make the time until November 3 without major accidents to take your current lead in the laps.
Of course, after the 2016 experience, you have to be careful with the polls and the expectations of the winners. The race does not end until all citizens have voted on November 3. And a lot can happen in the next few days, just think of the intense hacker attacks by the Russians and the Iranians, which are causing concern to the US security authorities. But if Biden still lost this race, it’s most likely not because of this TV matchup.
