Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden spoke of a gloomy day. “While other countries have been working around the clock to control this virus, our president has been too busy tweeting and playing golf,” Biden tweeted. He and Trump will face off in the November 3 election.
House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi made serious accusations by the Trump administration on Monday in a statement regarding the high deaths and infections. Not only has it downplayed the danger posed by the virus, it has also muzzled scientists, Pelosi said. In addition, warnings of a speedy return to schools and workplaces have been “buried”.
Trump sees the main responsibility for the severity of the pandemic, however, in China, where the virus was first detected. In a video message broadcast during the United Nations general debate, he said: “We must hold the nation responsible for this scourge: China.” He also announced: “We will distribute a vaccine, defeat the virus, end the pandemic, and enter a new era of unprecedented prosperity, cooperation and peace.”
Vote for the fight against the pandemic
Trump has repeatedly praised his administration’s efforts to contain the spread of the virus. His opponents accuse him of showing little sympathy for the victims. The number of deaths in the United States, a country of 330 million people, is the highest in the world to date in absolute terms. In relation to the number of inhabitants, however, the number of victims is higher in Peru, Belgium and Spain, among others, than in the United States. On Monday, the “New York Times” reported that the number of new infections in the United States exceeded 54,000. According to experts, that number would have to drop below 10,000 to control the pandemic.
Given the devastating results, the presidential election should also turn into a vote on fighting the pandemic. Multiple polls show that the majority of voters are more likely than Trump to trust former Vice President Biden to control the situation. Biden has also been ahead of Trump for months in national polls. But much can change before Election Day, and national polls have only limited informational value due to the complex electoral system.
