After the uproar in downtown Trier with five dead, the 51-year-old suspect received a murder order. This was confirmed by a police spokesman on Wednesday. Therefore, urgent suspect Bernd W. is in custody.

It was not clear at first whether the man also gave information about his motive during the presentation to the judge.

On Tuesday, a man with an SUV ran over bystanders in the pedestrian zone of Trier. Five people died, including a nine-week-old baby and his father. Another 18 people were injured.

According to the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Education, a vocational school teacher is also among the fatalities. “This is a terrible situation for the staff and for the students who have appreciated their teacher very much,” said Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD). The school’s psychology service as well as the pastors took care of the school’s students and teachers. “Five people were senselessly ripped out of their lives,” Hubig said. “My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the deceased.”

Bernd W. is said to have been drunk at the time of the crime. He has not yet appeared in the police. According to the prosecutor, there are signs of a possible mental illness Ws

The police spokesman confirmed a report in the newspaper “Trierischer Volksfreund”. In the courtroom it had been said whether the alleged driver of death, described by the prosecutor as mentally conspicuous, will go to psychiatry instead of preventive detention.

Accused provides information that is difficult to understand

“As before, the motive for the act has yet to be established,” says a press release from Trier police and the local prosecutor’s office.

In his interrogations on Tuesday and Wednesday by homicide officers, the suspect had given changing and partially incomprehensible information from which neither the motive nor the details of the course of the events could be derived. The questioning of the accused would continue in the coming days.

So far there have been no indications of political, religious or similar motives.

According to the investigators, the accused had mental disorders in his behavior during and after his arrest and in police custody. Therefore, the Trier prosecutor’s office will order a psychiatric report.

However, there are currently no concrete indications of a complete exclusion of guilt. Therefore, after the arrest warrant was issued, the accused was transferred to a penitentiary.
