At least twelve people were injured when two trams collided in Rostock. A trapped tram driver had to be released by the fire department.

Two trams collided in Rostock on Tuesday morning. As a police spokesman said, the accident happened on Hamburger Strasse, at the level of the Kunsthalle. At least twelve people were injured, some seriously, including the 33-year-old driver in line. Material damage is estimated at between 750,000 and one million euros. The route, the old federal highway 105, had to be temporarily closed to traffic.

Driver released by firefighters

According to the police, a maintenance car from Rostocker Straßenbahn AG (RSAG) was on the track and performed brake tests. A tram with passengers hit him on a straight stretch. The upper part of the tram was severely deformed by the force of the impact. The driver was seriously injured and was only able to recover long after the accident. But it was accessible, he told himself. Two line trams derailed. The rear of the maintenance car was also completely destroyed by the impact.

Investigations into the cause of the accident

Some passengers reportedly left the crash site on their own. If their health deteriorates during the day, they should report to rescue services, according to police. Accident investigators will now investigate trams that have crashed.
