Changing rooms for cyclists, charging stations for electric bicycles, tools for repairs: the “Train station of the year” award goes to the Bavarian pilgrimage town of Altötting. The concept of mobility is almost unique at the national level.

The award for the best train station in the country goes to Altötting this year: a jury of experts commissioned by the transport alliance Allianz pro Schiene awarded the Bavarian pilgrimage site the title of “Train station of the year”. The regional train station was particularly impressive with its service for cyclists.

In Altötting, for example, there are covered parking spaces for bicycles, charging stations, a workbench for repairs and a changing room. This offer is “a role model for all train stations in Germany and almost unique in Germany for a train station of this size,” said Dirk Flege, managing director of Allianz pro Schiene.

Historic building with a modern concept

The station shows “an example of the good service that train stations can offer their visitors in rural areas,” Flege emphasized. According to the interest group, other positive points of the station: a bistro, a good connection with the bus lines, car sharing, park and ride, as well as the building that has been renovated “with care and taking into account the protection of the monument”.

The station is a “successful example of how environmentally friendly transportation, train and bicycle can be combined,” Ronald Pofalla, member of the Deutsche Bahn Infrastructure Board, said of the award.

Special price for Thuringia

This year, the jury of the association of interest awarded its special award to Rottenbach in Thuringia: According to the Pro-Schiene Alliance, citizens are campaigning for the maintenance and renovation of the station. Consequently, they founded an inland farm shop and made the building a “point of contact in the center of their city.”

Allianz pro Schiene has chosen the season of the year since 2004. Last year Bad Bentheim and Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony won.
