Long-distance traffic between Hamburg and Sylt was interrupted on Monday due to a shunting accident at the Niebüll train station (Nordfriesland district). In the afternoon, a double locomotive pushed a parallel regional train off its track as it maneuvered, the railroads and federal police said. People were not injured. The railway asked to use local trains between Sylt and Hamburg instead of long-distance trains. Car trains between Niebüll and Westerland on Sylt were not affected by the accident, a railway spokeswoman said.
Buses between Niebüll and Bredstedt
Regional trains could only go from Westerland to Niebüll on the mainland on Monday night. Anyone coming from Husum and wanted to go to Sylt could only take the regional train to Bredstedt. Replacement buses were used between Niebüll and Bredstedt in both directions. The route is about 25 kilometers long. Initially, replacement traffic was installed even at a distance of about 38 kilometers from Klanxbüll to Bredstedt. But one track could be cleaned.
Derailed train: disabilities in Sylt traffic
Schleswig-Holstein Magazine – 07.09.2020 19: 30h.
A regional train derailed in Niebüll due to an accident with a locomotive. This causes disruptions in traffic to and from Sylt, according to the railway, probably until Tuesday morning.
The cause of the accident is not yet clear.
Experts from the Federal Railway Authority examined the accident site to clarify the cause. However, there was no precise information on how the accident could have occurred on Monday night. According to the federal police and the railroad spokesperson, the following should have happened: an intercity train from Dresden arrived late in Niebüll. To make up time, the locomotive was disconnected from the train, the railway spokeswoman said. The travelers had left the IC to continue their journey on local trains.

According to the Federal Police and the railway spokesperson, a shunting unit made up of two locomotives, including the Dresden Intercity locomotive, collided with a Sylt Shuttle Plus wagon. The locomotives pushed the Sylt Shuttle car off the track, causing the train’s front axle to derail. It is not yet clear why the trains crashed. A federal police spokesman said the two leads would be reduced to a single lead. The railroad spokeswoman was unable to provide any information.
Restrictions until Tuesday
Work began Monday night to get the train back on track. After that, the track and switch damage need to be repaired. The railroad spokeswoman said it is expected to be able to operate again with restrictions in both directions at the start of operations early Tuesday morning.
