Anyone vaccinated against Corona with AstraZeneca should subsequently receive an mRNA vaccine. This should be guaranteed, recommends the Association of Immunologists. It could not only increase the effect, but also increase the acceptance.
In the debate over the efficacy of AstraZeneca’s corona vaccine, immunologists are suggesting a subsequent revaccination with another agent. “Subsequently, the immunity that was triggered by the AstraZeneca vaccine can be boosted with an mRNA vaccine without any problems,” said Carsten Watzl, general secretary of the German Immunology Society, of the journal Augsburger Allgemeine.
Third vaccination with serum mRNA?
From the fourth quarter at the latest, more doses of vaccine will be available than necessary for a double vaccination of the entire population, said the Dortmund professor of medicine. “So it would not be a problem to catch up with a third vaccination with an mRNA vaccine.” This might be advisable anyway due to the virus variants and immunologically “it was not a problem”.
AstraZeneca’s serum is one of the so-called vector vaccine and therefore has a different mechanism of action than mRNA vaccines. The latter include funds from BioNTech and Pfizer, as well as Moderna.
Regular vaccinations will come
In view of the coronavirus mutation, virologists hope that people will be vaccinated against corona regularly in the future. In common ARD morning magazine explained virologist Martin Stürmer from the University of Frankfurt: “I assume that we will experience a pattern similar to the one we know from the classic influenza virus. I also assume that we will receive multiple vaccines.”

“AstraZeneca is safe and effective”
In the “Augsburger Allgemeine,” immunologist Watzl criticized the biopharmaceutical company’s vaccine debate, which was also fired by doctors, and warned against vaccine skepticism: “To say that the AstraZeneca vaccine is second-class is completely wrong, both scientifically and in terms of public effect. ” Previously, the federal Minister of Health, Jens Spahn, had already broken a spear for its quality in view of skepticism about the AstraZeneca vaccine. The vaccine is “safe and effective,” he said.
Hundreds of missed vaccination appointments
People’s skepticism towards the AstraZeneca vaccine sometimes leads to questionable situations. Although many people look forward to a vaccine, in Berlin, for example, several doses remain unused. According to the Federal Ministry of Health, more than 30,000 doses of vaccines have arrived there since last week. At the moment, however, only 990 cans have been inoculated. (Stand: February 15). The background to this is that there is freedom of choice in Berlin regarding the specific vaccine, and apparently many people perceive AstraZeneca as second-rate. It was also reported from North Rhine-Westphalia that hundreds of vaccination appointments were missed with the AstraZeneca product.
In the context of these AstraZeneca corona vaccine acceptance issues, Medical President Klaus Reinhardt appealed to medical staff to get vaccinated with the agent. The vaccine “demonstrably protects against infection and reduces the risk of serious and fatal courses,” said the president of the German Medical Association of the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. “That is why I advise all employees in clinics and clinics who have the right to be vaccinated to take the opportunity for a corona vaccination.”
