The tug of war over the video app TikTok in the US is entering the next round: the government is trying to overturn a court order from a judge, according to which it is not allowed to ban download of the app.

The US government wants to overturn a court ruling blocking its action against the popular video app TikTok. The Washington Department of Justice announced that it appealed the decision. At the end of September, a judge suspended the download ban.

At the same time, the countdown to TikTok continues: the Washington court rejected the company’s request to take action against the impending second step of the sanctions. Consequently, the app should no longer work in the US on November 12.

Dispute for data protection

When the download was stopped, TikTok should disappear from the US Apple and Google app stores. Users who already have the app on their smartphones would have been able to access TikTok as before. The application could not have been downloaded again. The Washington judge doubted the legal basis for the actions of the US government, and therefore granted TikTok’s request for a court order.

President Donald Trump sees the data of millions of Americans at risk from the short video platform, which is particularly popular with young people. For security reasons, ask that the app be sold to US companies. Negotiations are ongoing over the participation of the Walmart and Oracle corporations, but important details have not been clarified.
