The “zebras” caused a big surprise on Tuesday night. They inflicted their first bankruptcy on the Catalans after 22 consecutive victorious Premier League matches. In addition, coach Filip Jicha’s team returned the favor for the two bankruptcies against “Barça” in the group stage of the current Champions League.

Dahmke: “Boys are the coolest”

“It’s amazing, I have no idea what we did here. I’m very happy. The guys we have in the team are the best,” left wing Rune Dahmke told NDR. The Kiel native rightly analyzed the game with the words: “We did very well, we minimized our boots.” His coach Jicha was “incredibly proud to have won this trophy again after such a long time.”

The so far last triumph of the royal class of “Zebras” dates from the year 2012. “I am a very happy person and a coach,” said the cheerful Jicha.

Thw wide awake from the start

At THW, yesterday’s energy and nerve depletion semifinals against KC Veszprem (36:35 after extra time) left no visible traces. The Bundesliga team showed a great physical presence from the beginning and knew how to please with a variable attack game. In possession of the ball, superstar Sander Sagosen repeatedly attracted two “Barça” players, leaving space for his teammates. The “Zebras” made excellent use of the opportunities presented and thus baffled goalkeeper Kevin Möller, who had shown a gala performance in the semi-final duel with Paris Saint-Germain (37:32).

The Dane was not a factor against Kiel and was replaced by Gonzalo Pérez de Vargas midway through the first half.

Efficient Kiel with great withdrawal behavior.

At this point, THW had already posted a 13: 9 (18th) lead. Highly efficient attacking play and outstanding retreat behavior had shaped the appearance of the North Germans to date. But then they got a bit sloppy on offense and lost a bit of access to coverage. Barcelona immediately took advantage of the small phase of weakness. After Dika Mem tied at 15:15, Jicha took a break (26th). Rather than blaming his actors for their careless mistakes, the coach praised them. “You fight like pigs,” said the Czech, who won the Champions League in 2010 and 2012 with THW.

“Zebras” before the break with a final sprint

Jicha’s words had the effect she had hoped for. His team returned to the plate with a different body tension and thereafter acted more focused. At halftime, THW was leading 19:16. Also because the outstanding goalkeeper Niklas Landin stopped with the siren seven meters from Aron Palmarsson.

Tore THW Kiel: Ekberg (8), Sagosen (7), Dahmke (5), Weinhold (5), Pekeler (4), Wiencek (2), Reinkind (1), Zarabec (1)
FC Barcelona: Gomez Abello (10), Arino Bengoechea (4), Mem (4), Cindric (3), Fábregas (3), Enterrios Rodriguez (1), Goncalves dos Santos (1), N´guessan (1), Palmarsson (1 ))

Jicha team without loss of tension or concentration

The Danish despaired again and again to the culés in the second part. Landin clearly won the goalkeeping comparison, a more than important factor in a duel between two absolute European teams. And also in attack, THW had more – and above all better – solutions than “Barça”, who were rarely able to bring out their great potential in positional attack.

Kiel pulled away at 25:20 (43rd), but then seemed a bit fearful of his own courage. Suddenly the actions in possession of the ball seemed cumbersome, lack of precision in the final. A valiant launch from right side space by Steffen Weinhold at 27:23 (51) provided visible relief for the North Germans. The “zebras” could not take this initiative. When Patrick Wiencek scored 31:26 a minute and a half before the end of the day, the final decision was made.

Veszprems’ left winger Dejan Manaskov (right) scored just two goals against PSG.

Previously, Paris Saint-Germain had prevailed in the “small final” against Veszprem with 31:26 (14:11). The seven-time champions of France had found the game very bad. At five minutes, coach Raúl González’s team was 1: 5 behind. But then PSG continually increased. Right winger Benoit Kounkoud brought the French back to the front for the first time since the 1-0 victory (8: 7/20).

PSG score: Prandi 6, Remili 6, M. Hansen 5, Syprzak 3, L. Karabatic 2, Kounkoud 2, Kristopans 2, Nahi 2, Sole Sala 2/1, Grebille 1
Veszprem: Lekai 9, Marguc 4, Borozan 3, P. Nenadic 3/1, Mahé 2/1, Manaskov 2, Fathy Omar 1, Ferreira Moraes 1, Maqueda 1

Veszprems Lekai most successful shooter

Subsequently, the team around Danish and European world champion Mikkel Hansen no longer gave up their leadership. The most successful shooters in Paris were Elohim Prandi and Nedim Remili with six hits each. Hansen, 33, who must await his first premier-class title, contributed five goals to the success of his colors. Mate Lekai (nine goals) was the one who scored the most for Veszprem.
