Thuringian state government intervenes in Greiz and Sonneberg

The Thuringian government considers the measures taken by the Greiz and Sonneberg districts to be inadequate to curb the spread of the coronavirus. That is why the Thuringian Ministry of Health is now planning new steps. Both Greiz and Sonneberg are due to present protection concepts by Wednesday afternoon, which have now been examined by a ministry working group and finally evaluated.

According to the state government, both districts of Thuringia have exceeded the value of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants established by the federal and state governments in the past seven days. From this value, an emergency brake should take effect, which could also mean that the entire circuit was locked.

The state government does not want to go that far. However, “we decided to take additional measures to those suggested by the district for a limited period of time,” Health Minister Heike Werner (Linke) said of the Greiz district. The opening of catering establishments in the district will initially be limited to outdoor areas for the next two weeks. The Ministry states that the reason for this is that there is an increased risk of infection, particularly in gastronomic interiors.

The same applies to the Sonneberg district, which was asked to take this action on Wednesday. Because this regulation cannot be found in the general decree released Thursday by the district, the ministry is also asking Sonneberg to do so.

“We will now closely monitor how the infection process unfolds in the two counties and will reevaluate the situation early next week,” the minister said. The ministry wants to respond to requests for help from the two counties for human resources, for example to be able to trace the contacts of infected people. “We are working hard on that.”

There was a dispute in Greiz in the past few days because the district administrator objected to his county being exempt from flexing at the national level. Only the ban on visits to care facilities should continue to apply initially. The state government had recently warned Greiz that instructions would be issued if necessary.
