Thuringia, with its left-wing Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow, is sidestepping: the East German state only partially approves of the massive restrictions on public life agreed to by the federal and state governments.
At the post-summit press conference on the Corona crisis, Merkel reported that the new resolutions would be supported by all prime ministers. Despite the vastly different levels of infection in the federal states, everyone participated, he said.
However, the protocol statement of the state chancellery available to SPIEGEL states that Thuringia only supports “those measures that are adequate and proportionate to effectively contain the infection process through scientific knowledge.”
Thuringia hopes that the Bundestag will determine an acute national health emergency, which justifies the resolutions passed by the Conference of Prime Ministers (MPK). With the adoption of the MPK resolution, “there is no prejudice to parliamentary procedure in the Free State of Thuringia.”
At the same time, Ramelow demanded in the federal government’s proposal that “by means of its financial strength and the side of tax revenues that are incumbent on the federal states only” it ensures that all actors directly and indirectly affected by the measures taken are effectively supported.
In the evening, Ramelow said: “There is no rejection from Thuringia.” But he will present the resolutions to the Thuringian state parliament and his cabinet for confirmation.
