Three policemen have died in a small town in France. The officers probably wanted to help a woman. Since then, the author has been found dead.

In a dramatic rescue attempt, three policemen were shot dead in a French town. A fourth was injured, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said in Paris on Wednesday. The gendarmes were mortally wounded shortly after midnight Wednesday when they tried to save a woman who had fled to the roof of a house, the AFP news agency reported.

The suspect is 48 years old

The suspect was found dead, Darmanin said. The 48-year-old gunman fled after setting fire to his house in the city of Saint-Just, in the central French department of Puy-de-Dôme, according to AFP. The woman is safe. Darmanin announced that he would go to the scene of the crime in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

The gendarmes wanted to help the woman who was a victim of domestic violence, Head of State Emmanuel Macron said via Twitter. “The nation shares the pain of families.” To protect citizens, the security forces risked their lives: “They are our heroes,” said the president. According to the Interior Ministry, the murdered gendarmes were 21, 37 and 45 years old.

The alleged perpetrator had been suspected in the past due to a custody dispute over a child, reported AFP. The wounded policeman was taken to a hospital. The gendarmerie in France belongs to the army, but it assumes police functions and is therefore also subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior.
