Thousands of people at the “lateral thinking” demonstration in Dresden: many of them without a mask

In Dresden, up to 5,000 lateral thinkers gathered at the Theaterplatz on Saturday.

Dresden – While the number of infections is increasing again, thousands do not care about protective measures: in the afternoon, up to 5,000 so-called lateral thinkers gathered at Dresden’s Theaterplatz. Many of them without a mask, the police were powerless.

The police took a position around the Theaterplatz: “We checked the compliance with the mask requirement at the entrances,” says spokesman Marko Laske (46).

“The emergency services were shown several hundred certificates and mask exemptions. It could not be clarified on the site to what extent they were authentic. In individual cases we investigated suspected falsification of documents.”

The result: thousands of people filled the square without a mask. As more than expected arrived, the meeting area was expanded. The organizer was informed on several occasions of the obligation to wear a mask and compliance with the distances.

Michael Ballweg (45), founder of the Stuttgart-based “Querdenker”, spoke on stage.

This denied the radicalization of the movement. Despite this, there were again Reich standard bearers in the audience, neo-Nazi propaganda was distributed on the margins, the citizens of the Reich demanded a ban on all parties and the reinstatement of the 1871 constitution.

The audience itself, however, traversed the entire spectrum of society. The speaker was Heike Oehlert (54), district president of “Free Voters Leipzig-Land”.

He did not want to have seen any neo-Nazis or rightists at the anti-crown rally in Berlin, and announced on stage that he was leaving the party. Also in the audience was the Saxon vice president of state Andreas Hofmann (54).

From the AfD, among others, the member of the Bundestag Karsten Hilse (55) and the head of the Saxon state Jörg Urban (56) attended the rally.

The appearance of the currently released police officer Michael Fritsch (57) along with Artur Helios (55) provided a sequel: the officer not only claimed that Germany had no constitution. They both stretched their arms so visibly that police are now investigating them on suspicion of the Hitler salute.

The officers also accuse a participant (31) of the same. Most of the other speeches were about demonizing the masks and minimizing the risk of the pandemic. Overall, however, the event remained peaceful and the counter-protest with around 15 participants was peaceful.
