This is what the new Berlin airport looks like two weeks before its opening

Grass no longer grows from the cracks between the paving slabs at Willy-Brandt-Platz, the open space in front of Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The benches and floors are freshly made, the leaf blowers are unmistakable and shape the esplanade.

Behind this is the 180-meter-wide BER Terminal 1, the official three-letter code for the new capital’s new airport. The building’s auction ceremony was held ten years ago. The opening was scheduled for October 30, 2011, but was postponed to June 3, 2012. As is well known, this and other dates fell apart.

The four-month trial operation was completed these days. 9,000 extras were on duty on Tuesdays and Thursdays to test processes from check-in to gate and arrival area, all under crown conditions.

After years of delays, the airport is scheduled to go into operation on October 31, after 14 years of construction and an expense of 6 billion euros.

On the following pages of the photo gallery above, we show impressions of a tour shortly before the opening.
