FC Bayern have just won the “Christmas Championship” with a victory against Bayer Leverkusen, when the triple winner wins the next prize and receives company in the long jump.

Bayern Munich’s triple winners, ice hockey superstar Leon Draisaitl and outstanding long jumper Malaika Mihambo are the 2020 German athlete of the year. The winners were greeted on Sunday night as part of a gala that focused on the crown pandemic and only with selected guests. the awards took place at the Kurhaus Baden-Baden.

Munich was honored as Team of the Year, Draisaitl and Mihambo as the best individual athletes. Additionally, basketball superstar Dirk Nowitzki, biathlete Magdalena Neuner, and beach volleyball duo Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst were named German sports legends of the decade.

Clear victory for Draisaitl

Coach Hansi Flick’s team prevailed in the choice of German sports journalists clearly ahead of French Open winners Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies. The bobsleigh team led by Francesco Friedrich came in third place. The Munich star team around newly crowned world footballer Robert Lewandowski succeeds the ski jumping men.

The victory in men was for Draisaitl (25) even clearer. The North American professional league NHL pro relegated javelin thrower Johannes Vetter and triathlete Jan Frodeno to places two and three. Draisaitl had played the best season of his life and was named the league’s most valuable player (MVP). Last year the world decathlon champion Niklas Kaul won.

Mihambo received the award for the second time in a row. After her triumph last year, the 26-year-old won this time just ahead of British Open winner Sophia Popov (golf) and three-time world champion Emma Hinze (trail bike). This year, Mihambo also managed 7.03m from a short run and was once again world number one.
