The magazine “Öko-Test” recommended more than half of the toasted breads analyzed. However, eight products are contaminated with mineral oil. Ironically, two organic toasties stand out in a particularly negative light.

Toast may contain mineral oil. The magazine “Öko-Test” (issue 01/2021) found in an investigation in eight of the 20 products contamination with the substance. Wholegrain breads, cereals and spelled toast were tried. A possible source of mineral oil could be technical white oils, according to “Öko-Test”. They are used as a lubricating grease in devices and machines.

However, testers can recommend every two loaves of bread: they rated it “very good” eight times and three loaves of bread were “good.” Including branded products like “Golden Toast Whole Grain Toast”, but also inexpensive private labels like “K-Classic Whole Grain Toast”. Seven products landed in the middle with “satisfactory” and “sufficient”. One was “poor” and the other “unsatisfactory”.

Toast: two products failed the “Öko-Test”

The testers found a particularly high level of mineral oil components with 45 milligrams of MOSH per kilogram in the “Backhaus Bioland Whole Grain Toast” (“unsatisfactory” test result). MOSH can accumulate in human organs. Its exact effect is not yet clear; in animal experiments they have damaged the liver.

The “Ammerländer Organic Wholegrain Sandwich” (“insufficient”) also had high levels of mineral oil. In addition to MOSH, the lab also discovered mineral aromatic oil hydrocarbons (MOAH). These are particularly harmful mineral oil components. This group of substances also includes carcinogenic substances.

There is too much salt in these toasted breads

The testers also determined the salt content of the bread. Because permanently high salt intake is a risk of hypertension. Most of the toasts contained less salt than usual with fresh bread. The salt content was classified as “increased” in only two products. Herzberger Bio “100% Whole Wheat 100% Whole Wheat Toast” (“satisfactory”) and “Bio Ammerländer Whole Grain Sandwich” (“insufficient”) contained more than 1.2 grams of salt per 100 grams.

You can read the detailed test result in the January issue of “Öko-Test”.
