Trier’s suspected gunman parked his car, smoked, and smiled at police officers

The alleged Trier gunman has apparently ended his chaos for the Roman city. According to police, he is said to have parked his car, lit a cigarette and smiled as he awaited his arrest.

According to the police, the alleged perpetrator parked the car and smoked a cigarette after the riot in Trier. Police officers found the 51-year-old man standing in the back of the car, Trier Police Vice President Franz-Dieter Ankner reported on Friday at a special meeting of the interior committee of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament in Mainz. “There he looked at the emergency services with a smile.” Then the agents overpowered him and arrested him.

Police also found live ammunition in the car. But so far no suitable weapon has been discovered, Ankner reported. Because there were boxes in the car, explosives experts were called in, but then they gave the go-ahead. There is still no evidence of accomplices or sympathizers of the event.

In Ankner’s words, the 51-year-old Trier-born man is considered a loner. He has no children and is single. According to previous knowledge, the German was unemployed and recently also without permanent residence. Apparently he slept in the car. There were no entries in the police or state security records. The off-road vehicle that was used for the event was handed over to the man by an acquaintance as a courtesy, the vice president of police said.

According to previous knowledge, the 51-year-old suspect drove an off-road vehicle at high speed through the pedestrian zone of Trier on Tuesday afternoon. According to Lewentz, he had apparently run over people on purpose. Five bystanders died, including a baby a few weeks old.
