The situation in Germany’s neighboring countries is getting worse

All of Europe is fighting the second crown wave with drastic measures. In some of Germany’s neighboring countries, the situation is particularly dire and there is little prospect of improvement.

In view of the dramatic number of infections, measures against the second corona wave are tightening in Germany’s neighboring countries. Poland closes all restaurants as of Saturday and prohibits gatherings with more than five people. Belgium closes the amusement parks. Meanwhile, the Czech Minister of Health has to leave his post because he has violated his own regulations.

For German tourists, the number of possible destinations abroad continues to decline this Saturday. Starting at midnight, the travel warning decided on Thursday will apply to Switzerland, almost all of Austria, much of Italy, Poland and some other regions of the EU.

Poland

In Poland, the number of infections compared to the population is now almost three times higher than in Germany. The country must curb the spread of the corona virus, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Friday. The catering is initially closed for two weeks, but can be extended. Computer distance learning was prescribed for all 4th grade students. Children and young people up to 16 years old can only leave the house or apartment between 8 am and 4 pm during the day if they are accompanied by an adult.

France

France extends the night curfew to around two-thirds of the country’s residents. A total of 46 million people will be affected as of Saturday, French Prime Minister Jean Castex said on Thursday. The curfew would then apply to 54 departments and the French overseas territory of French Polynesia. “The situation is serious, it is serious in Europe, it is serious in France”, warned Castex and at the same time threatened to take even stricter measures. November will be tough.

Almost 67 million people live in France. So far, there is already a night curfew in the Paris metropolitan area and eight other metropolises. Since the weekend between 9pm and 6am, people have not been allowed to be on the streets without a valid reason. It’s too early to assess the effects of the curfew there, Castex said. The night curfew is now in force in the department of Bas-Rhin with the Alsace metropolis of Strasbourg or in Corsica. Furthermore, almost the entire Mediterranean coast is affected.

“If we don’t work together to contain the epidemic, we will have to take tougher action,” Castex said. There is still time to avoid it, but time is running out.

France also unveiled its new anti-corona app “TousAntiCovid” on Thursday. The previous version “StopCovid” was a failure. The new app should now be a “Swiss digital army knife” in the fight against Corona, said Digital Secretary of State Cédric O.

The country has reached a peak with 41,622 new corona infections in 24 hours. That’s about 15,000 more than the day before, authorities announced Thursday night. Overall, the number of new infections rose to 999,000, almost reaching the 1 million mark.

Since the weekend, the health emergency has been back in force, with which the government can enforce broad restrictions by decree.

Belgium

After the Czech Republic, Belgium is the country with the second highest number of infections in the EU compared to the population. Amusement parks must initially close for the next four weeks. A maximum of 40 people can participate in cultural, religious or other events inside, as long as Corona rules are observed. If a distance of at least one and a half meters is guaranteed, there may be up to 200 people who must nevertheless wear a mask.

In universities, the rooms cannot be used more than 20 percent; Here too a mask is required. Exceptions apply in the first year of study. Spectators are again prohibited at sporting events. If possible, people should continue to work from home.

Czech Republic

Restaurants in the Czech Republic have been closed for a week and a half. Health Minister Roman Prymula apparently visited one anyway. The newspaper “Blesk” photographed the politician and epidemiologist leaving a fancy restaurant at night without wearing a mask. Prime Minister Andrej Babis said on Friday that he had asked the 56-year-old to resign. If you don’t, you will be released. The minister’s misconduct is “unforgivable.”

Austria

In Austria, German travel advisories and especially the new Bavarian proof obligation for travelers from the risk areas of Corona are rejected. Politicians and business representatives criticize the weekly corona test that travelers have been asking for in Bavaria since Friday. “A certain amount of preparation time would have been desirable,” said Günther Platter, head of the Tyrolean region.

Austria’s European Minister Karoline Edtstadler wants to speak about the extended travel warning on Tuesday during a visit to Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU). “We regret the German government’s decision to issue a travel warning in much of Austria, and the associated new measures,” the conservative politician said on Friday.

Starting Saturday, a travel warning from the Foreign Ministry will apply to all of Austria, except for the federal state of Carinthia and two small enclaves on the German border. If you enter Germany without a current negative corona test result, you must go into quarantine, from which, however, you can be “released” later. Exceptions apply to travelers. As of November 8, travelers from Austria can only be released from quarantine after five days with a trial.
