“The question is irrelevant”
Trump’s lawyer does not want to admit electoral failure
To date, Donald Trump has not officially admitted defeat in the presidential election. His followers also find it difficult to make such a commitment. The latest example: In the impeachment process, Trump’s defense attorney tries to ignore the uncomfortable truth.
In the impeachment process against Donald Trump, his lawyer refused to admit the electoral defeat of the former US president. The question is “irrelevant” to the process, defender Michael van der Veen said Friday. For the impeachment, it is only the charge of inciting the riot, said the lawyer.
Trump has yet to admit defeat in the November 3 election. Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders asked if defense attorneys believed Trump won the election. “My assessment is irrelevant in this process,” van der Veen said.
Then he added: “In my opinion, it is irrelevant to the subject that this institution is dealing with.” The only relevant question is whether Trump’s remarks were so inciting that they led to violence and unrest, he said. The answer is no, Trump campaigned for peaceful protests.
The House of Representatives had launched an impeachment process against Trump because his supporters had stormed the Capitol. Trump had incited his supporters on January 6 that they had stolen his election victory. Among other things, he said: “If you don’t fight like the devil, you will have no more land.” Five people were killed in the riots, including a police officer. Therefore, Democrats want to see Trump convicted and hope to ban him from political office at the federal level in the future.
The Senate is likely to decide on the so-called impeachment of Trump over the weekend. So far it seems like an acquittal for Trump. For a conviction, 17 Republicans would have to join the 50 Democrats in the Senate, which is not predictable.
