The number of unreported cases is slowly decreasing
Three percent of Munich residents already had Corona

Around 1.5 percent of all Munich residents have been shown to be infected with the corona virus. However, according to a study, twice as many citizens of the Bavarian capital already have antibodies. It also shows that mortality is much higher than that of seasonal flu.

According to a large-scale antibody study, just under 3.3 percent of Munich residents were infected with the coronavirus in November. This means that the number of those who have developed antibodies against the Sars-CoV-2 virus has almost doubled since the first wave, said the researchers from Infectious and Tropical Medicine at the Munich University Hospital. It is the first large national study to provide results on the number of second wave infections.

At the start of the new round of testing, health authorities were verifiably aware that around 1.5 percent of Munich residents had been infected with the corona virus. This means that the actual number of infected people is roughly double. In the first round, the proportion of infections detected in the study was four times higher than initially known. The fact that the number of unreported cases is now lower shows that the trial strategy is proving its value in Bavaria, said study director Michael Hoelscher.

In a first round of the study from April 5 to June 10, scientists working with Hoelscher examined about 5,300 people from representatively selected households. At that time, a good 1.7 percent of people had developed antibodies. According to a new calculation, the mortality of those infected in the first round was 0.47 percent and therefore many times higher than that of seasonal flu infections.

In the spring, the researchers had personally appeared in teams at homes to draw blood from people, but in early November they sent test participants a kit to draw their own blood by pricking their finger with the request to rub a few drops. of blood on a filter paper and mail it back. . By December 9, a good 4,250 blood samples had been received.
