The number of reproduction alone is not decisive: what is still important?

The Robert Koch Institute currently believes that distance rules in everyday life have no alternatives. According to Vice President Schaade, the number of replicates of the virus will no longer change as quickly.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, the reproductive factor R is not the only decisive factor in the spread of the coronavirus to assess the current status of the corona. The number of new infections in a daily comparison, the number of tests that were positive, and the health system workload were also important, RKI Vice President Lars Schaade said at a press conference in Berlin. You can see their most important statements in the video above or here.

According to RKI estimates, the so-called reproduction number R could continue around 1 in the coming days. The reason is that the number of new infections each day is barely decreasing and is approaching a plateau, Schaade said. The current number of reproductions, or R value for short, shows the infection process approximately a week and a half earlier, the value reported on Monday, for example, the situation from April 28 to May 3.

In general, the R-value is subject to fluctuations, among other things because individual outbreaks influence the value more than with more infections in general. Therefore, the RKI will in the future issue a so-called smoothed R value, which would better offset these fluctuations.

There is no alternative to distance rules: it is possible to open borders

The RKI vice currently sees no alternative to distance rules, in case the virus spreads further and no vaccine can be anticipated in the foreseeable future. That’s why behavior in everyday life should be maintained for now, says Schaade.

Under certain conditions, the RKI considers that it is possible to reopen the borders in Europe. If there were unanimity and a similar epidemiological situation in neighboring countries, such an opening of the border could be justified, Schaade said.

According to media reports Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron made a phone call on Monday night to discuss the decrease in Franco-German border traffic. For weeks now, only those who can show an important reason can enter Germany. These are, for example, truckers, members of the medical profession, or travelers. The leader of the North Rhine-Westphalia government, Armin Laschet (CDU), for example, had called for easing.
