“The lion’s den”
A cold bath for the shower, and everyone freaks out
Toxic turf wars within the investor pool. The Trigger: A shower foam made from essential oils. Not exactly a rocket product, you might think, but the lions unpacked the very large silverware.
When the lions roar. The mood changed twice in the last episode of “Den of the Lions.” In the first match, Nils Glagau snapped at his colleague Judith Williams: “Let me finish!” The point of contention was a fitness bandage called “mybimaxx”which promises to cut training time in half while building at least the same amount of muscle. Glagau did not understand USP. “I could also strap a blood pressure monitor around my arm and it would have the same effect.” Williams saw it differently and kept interrupting his fellow judge. But she didn’t want to invest either: “That’s still not attractive enough for me.”
The second escalation occurred in the tone of “MediDusch”, a shower foam with essential oils that is supposed to replace the cold bath (the Stern have tested the product). Naturally without silicone, perfume or microplastics. The inventor, a pharmaceutical representative in the “pharmacy sales force,” had previously sold her product on her own and had visited more than 100 pharmacies, with astonishing success. Investors were on an endorphin frenzy in an instant. Georg Kofler languished at the founder, who has since changed the name of her product to “MeDusch”: “You are a great entrepreneur with sales genes!”
“Stop, don’t keep talking now!”
All the lions wanted the deal, only Carsten Maschmeyer sniffed the menthol and almond product skeptically (“Can that cause irritation in the genital area?”). However, the real reason for his reluctance was another: in 2018, he and Ralf Dümmel had a mini-inhaler in the “Cave of the Lions”. “aspUraclip” invested and did not want to compete with “MeDusch”. Dümmel had no problem with that. “I’d love to have the whole package with you …”, he started with a suda-foam and Maschmeyer hissed at him sharply: “Stop, don’t keep talking now!” The two heavyweights in sales and marketing withdrew to seek advice and made the maker of “MeDusch” an offer that she could not refuse: 100,000 euros for 30 percent plus a poster campaign worth half million.
In contrast, the founders of “pocket sky” left the stage of the show penniless. Nils Glagau found that light therapy glasses, which are supposed to have a stimulating effect on winter blues and jet lag, are too “niche” and “too seasonal.” And also with the inventors of “Schmuki”, a bag of soil for children, did not look good for a long time.
Healthy fast food
Georg Kofler said the poly bag, which is supposed to protect the car and parents’ nerves, “is not exactly a rocket science product” and expressed the fear that it would be easy to copy. Where he was not wrong: “Schmuki” was denied the patent because he has no technical innovation. After one investor after another jumped in, Ralf Dümmel, father of three grown children (“Where were you 20 years ago?”) Took heart. It gave the southern German startup the desired 100,000 euros, but doubled its stake to 40 percent. Dümmel: “I will cut the value of your company in half so that you do not start a turbo, but a turbo S.”
Ella della Rovere, the boss of “Ella’s Basenbande” held a highly acclaimed appearance. What a woman! She worked as a physician for 40 years and founded a pain clinic, and dared to start over at 68. Her theme: a balanced acid-base balance. Your product: healthy prepared dishes based on vegetables. The lionesses and lions loved it. Ralf Dümmel barely held him in the chair (“You’re cool!”). But the euphoria died down when it became clear that the plant-based creations had to be refrigerated. Supermarket refrigeration surfaces are small and competitive. Dümmel went out. That’s why Nils Glagau got involved. “I’ll do my best to keep your glasses deliciously fresh on the shelf,” he yelled at Ella. And she called again: “Nils, welcome to our gang!”
