It is the largest known corona outbreak to date in a Berlin nursing home: at the “Goldenherz” health and care center in Berlin-Mitte, more than 150 people were infected with the virus as a result of an outbreak. The health administration announced this Monday night at the request of Tagesspiegel.

As a result, a total of 108 residents and 46 employees were infected. So far, 22 residents and one employee have died with or from a Covid 19 infection.

Authorities reportedly had already detected the outbreak in November and the quarantine for many residents had expired on Friday. The health department then screened 140 residents again, but the results weren’t available Monday night.

The Tagesspiegel had learned of the outbreak from an informant late last week. But initially the responsible authorities had not ruled on the case. The home management declined to provide information about the case last Friday. You don’t want to comment, the house manager said on the phone and hung up.

According to information from the daily mirror, the “Golden Heart” facility had already experienced a crown outbreak in May. At the time, however, authorities managed to reduce the spread to a few more cases.

On this occasion, according to the health administration, the outbreak was detected for the first time in twelve residents and three employees with a rapid PoC antigen test. Since then, the home supervisor has been in constant contact with the facility.

Problem with the mentally ill

“The behavior of mentally ill residents in particular was found to be problematic in terms of containing the infection,” the health administration spokeswoman said. And furthermore, “since residents often lack information on actions taken due to illness, it can currently be assumed that this is the reason for the rapid spread of infection within the facility.” Also, contact tracing is more difficult in these patients.

The middle sprout is part of a growing sprout. More recently, a case was known from Reinickendorf with more than 100 people infected and twelve dead so far. In Friedrichshain there is also a nursing home in which there are several deaths and more than 80 infected people.

The largest outbreak occurred in a nursing home in Lichtenberg until the current case became known. At least 15 people died there as a result of the outbreak. Later, Health Senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD) called for the home management to be removed. Now Lichtenberg’s sad courage at Mitte has been surpassed.
