WLess than four weeks before the US presidential election, runner-up candidates Mike Pence and Kamala Harris square off in a televised duel. After the infection by President Donald Trump’s crown, the Republican Vice President and the Democratic Senator will be sitting on stage Wednesday night (local time) at the televised debate in Salt Lake City, Utah, separated by Plexiglass. There is also a safety distance of more than three and a half meters between them.
The night of the debate is about the corona pandemic, the consequences of which have already killed more than 210,000 people in the United States. The duel took place just under a week after President Trump became aware of the corona infection. The president was treated in the hospital for three days and released from the clinic on Monday.
US Democratic runner-up Kamala Harris has accused President Donald Trump of failing in the crown pandemic. “This administration has lost the right to reelection,” Harris said during the pre-election debate Wednesday night in Salt Lake City. “The American people have witnessed the greatest governmental failure in the history of our country.” Harris is running for the November 3 election as vice president of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
Harris announces plan to fight corona
Vice President Mike Pence, who heads the Corona task force in the White House, defended the Trump administration’s crisis management during the debate. Pence noted that Trump had imposed restrictions on travelers from China and the EU at the beginning of the pandemic, thus saving numerous lives.
Harris said that unlike the Trump administration, Biden has a plan to fight the coronavirus. Contact tracing should be improved and a vaccine should be made available, when development is complete, free of charge.
Pence said he and Trump had great confidence in the ability of Americans to put coronavirus protection information into practice. The Trump administration is accused of failing to observe the protection measures themselves. Last Thursday, Trump himself tested positive for the corona virus. He was treated at Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, near Washington, Friday through Monday. The pandemic has killed more than 210,000 people in the United States to date.
Pence dodges questions about climate change and possible handover
When asked by Harris if he considered climate change an existential threat, Mike Pence sidestepped. “The climate is changing, we will follow the science,” said the Trump deputy. Harris described climate change as “an existential threat to us as human beings.” He announced that if Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden wins the election against Trump on November 3, the United States will “proudly” rejoin the Paris Agreement.
Trump has announced the exit from the agreement. Pence said Wednesday that a return to the treaty and the “Green New Deal” sought by parts of the Democrats would destroy American jobs. Harris responded that the renewable energy reforms that Biden is seeking will create many new jobs.
