Despite all the calls to the contrary: the flood of daytime tourists in the Harz Mountains continues. By Saturday morning, the parking spaces were almost full.
According to the police, traffic was also jammed on Bundesstraße 4 from Bad Harzburg in the direction of Torfhaus. The large parking lot of the snow-covered peat house was crowded and many drivers parked on the side of the road. Officials called on hikers to avoid large areas in other areas of the Harz Mountains and keep escape routes clear.
Full parking spaces even on New Year’s Day
Although the ski lifts are closed due to the corona pandemic, numerous people flocked to Upper Harz on New Year’s Day. All parking facilities were fully utilized. However, a police spokesman told NDR.de that there were not so many visitors that motorists would have parked at Bundesstraße 4. The situation had calmed down a bit by New Year’s Eve. If the appeals of the authorities and tourism professionals were the reason for the slight moderation or simply the cloudy weather, that could be seen in the next week of vacation.
Traffic jams and queues
In the days before, so many people had entered the Harz Mountains that there were sometimes major traffic problems. Traffic jams formed repeatedly between Bad Harzburg and Torfhaus and, according to the police, the necessary distance could hardly be maintained in Wurmberg and Torfhaus. Christin Wohlgemuth, spokesperson for the Harz Tourism Association, described the situation before New Year’s Eve in the Harz Mountains.
Joint Appeal: “Act Wisely”
Counties, municipalities, police and the tourism association renewed their appeal to people to stay home. “We all love the Harz Mountains and that’s wonderful, but act wisely and sensibly,” reads a letter written by the mayors of the cities of Bad Harzburg, Braunlage, Goslar, Clausthal-Zellerfeld and district manager Thomas Brych. (SPD) as well as the Goslar Police Inspectorate and the Harz Tourism Association.
