The first EU country pulls the rope: all of Ireland is blocked again

The corona pandemic hits the island republic of Ireland harder than other countries. Just under five million people live there and more than 50,000 have already been infected. Due to the virus situation, the state is now the first EU member to drastically reduce public life.

Ireland will be the first member of the European Union to return to the national crown lockdown. The Irish government announced that the highest of the five tiers went into effect on Wednesday. Consequently, Prime Minister Michael Martin once again ordered a curfew for the population. Visitors from other households can no longer enter the interior, pubs and restaurants can only offer food as a delivery service, but schools must remain open. The measures should apply for the next six weeks until December 1.

“Everyone in the country is asked to stay home,” Martin said in a nationally televised address. Consequently, people can only move within five kilometers of their place of residence. However, schools and day care centers must remain open “because we cannot and do not want the future of our children and adolescents to become another victim of this disease,” Martin said.

Like many others in the EU, the country is experiencing a renewed increase in the number of cases. On Monday, authorities reported 1,031 new infections in 24 hours. So far, a total of almost 50,993 infections have been registered in the republic. According to official figures, people have died in Ireland as a result of the crown since the pandemic began in 1852. The country has only 4.98 million people.

Ireland has recently become one of the few countries where the German Crown warning app also works. The update to version 1.5 was released on Monday on the Google and Apple app stores. This means that the European interface, which is supposed to make various Corona applications compatible, was launched after a successful testing phase, the EU Commission explained. In a first step, the applications from Germany, Italy and Ireland will be linked. Other countries will follow soon, so as many as 16 national apps could be linked together by the end of the year. The federal warning app can warn of a potentially dangerous encounter with people infected with corona.
