The escalators at the BER train station only go up, they don’t go down … – BZ Berlin

Next stop: BER! Five days before the opening of the new airport, the train station below Terminal 1 will open on Monday. The first S-Bahn officially arrived at 11:29 am on Sunday afternoon. But it doesn’t seem to run completely without breakdowns even under the broken airport …

The reason: from the train, passengers can comfortably climb the escalators to the terminal. However, if you want to carry your luggage from the plane to the train, you have to go down the stairs or wait for the elevator. Escalators from top to bottom? There are none!

Who slept there?

“Apparently it was planned this way from the beginning 15 years ago,” says the airport manager, Engelbert Lütke Daldrup (63). “We can get to the train station wonderfully with elevators from check-in.”
But: if flight operations return to the pre-Corona level at some point, this could lead to wait times in front of elevators. The “Berliner Morgenpost” reported on this first.

Unlike the airport, the new train station was ready in time for the planned opening date of 2012. “In the meantime, we have updated some of the systems,” says Alexander Kaczmarek (57), authorized representative from Berlin. “A lot of things don’t get better after eight or nine years.” For example, ticket vending machines have been replaced by new ones.

The new station (total cost: 675 million euros including the new connection line) has two S-Bahn and four long-distance tracks. Deutsche Bahn expects up to 125,000 passengers a day. In future, the FEX express airport will stop here every 30 minutes from the main station, the RE7, RB14, RB22 every hour, the S-Bahn lines 9 and 45 every 20 minutes and the IC from Rostock to Dresden every 2 hours. Touch.

The S9 runs from Monday morning and evening through Terminal 5 (formerly Schönefeld Airport) and Waßmannsdorf to BER, the S45 from Thursday. With the inauguration on Saturday, the regional lines will also operate.
