The Brexit deal describes Netscape as “modern”

Do you remember Mozilla Mail? Or to Netscape Communicator 4.x? These are completely outdated email programs that are no longer used today. The latest update for Mozilla Mail (not to be confused with Thunderbird) dates from 2006. Netscape Communicator 4.x hasn’t even been updated since 2002.

However, the trade agreement between Britain and the European Union refers to the software and describes it as “modern”.

The relevant passage can be found on page 921 of the contract. Data exchange between countries is regulated here. Because: With Brexit, Britain is also abandoning the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is why new deals need to be made.

The data exchange of, for example, vehicle registrations or fingerprints must be encrypted using the standard s / MIME function, it says there. This is justified by the fact that they are already used in »modern email programs«. For example, with “Outlook, Mozilla Mail, and Netscape Communicator 4.x”.

The Hackaday news site speculates that the error occurred because officials simply copied text passages from old legal documents. The same text can be found in a 2008 EU law.
