Hansi Flick really surprised everyone with this!
In the home game against VfL Wolfsburg (2-1), Bayern’s triple coach had Niklas Süle as a right-back. A position that is actually alien to the 25-year-old. At most, the trained central defender is used in a chain of three in the middle positions. But Flick trusted him in this position against the wolves.

SPORT1 asked Flick: What was your idea of Süle?
“We wanted to work with a three-man build and build the game against two rival forwards with David, Jérôme and Niklas. This meant that we wanted one more player in the remaining defense and therefore a compactness in defense,” explained Flick .
And also: “We lifted Lucas Hernandez up a bit on the left and Leroy and Kingsley occupied the right wing. Thomas then acted as six and should still be in the middle spaces.”
“That was the only surprise for me. We got it under control and found a good space in the game,” Wolfsburg coach Oliver Glasner said of the night’s surprise personality.

Flick satisfied with Süle’s experiment

Flick’s conclusion: “I think the plan was not bad because we have to be very creative and adapt at the moment. So the idea was to build things asymmetrically. The goal was three points that we achieved.”
