That is why you should wear masks every day.

After the summer holidays, virologist Christian Drosten returns with his podcast. In the new episode, the expert explains why everyday masks are so important and how they help contain corona pathogens.

Berlin virologist Christian Drosten has emphatically announced the use of so-called everyday masks against the spread of the coronavirus. There are weaknesses in these masks to prevent the aerosols responsible for the transmission of the coronavirus, Drosten said on northern German radio. However, people cannot become infected as quickly with the use of the masks as without them. Opponents of the mask doubt its effectiveness and refuse to use it.

Drosten said that the effect of the masks can be demonstrated in an encounter with a person with bad breath. “This bad breath is aerosols,” said the chief virologist at the Berlin Charité. When, for example, two colleagues without masks meet at a buffet and talk, the colleague notices his colleague’s bad breath. But if both colleagues wear a mask in the situation, one will no longer notice the other’s bad breath. “We no longer realize it, we can also translate that: I can no longer get infected so quickly.”

“Not a single really new find”

Drosten said this on the podcast “The Coronavirus Update”, with which he returns to the air on Tuesday after two months. The virologist, who is also one of the top government advisers, said there has been “not a single real new finding” about the coronavirus in recent weeks. The studies published in the meantime had corroborated quite a lot of what was already known in the preliminary studies.

The podcast’s 50 episodes to date have been viewed more than 60 million times. In the future, however, Christian Drosten will only be able to be heard every two weeks on Tuesdays, because he alternates with the Frankfurter. Virologin Sandra Ciesek in the science program.
