Federal Economy Minister Peter Altmaier does not expect major problems with Tesla’s planned settlement in Brandenburg due to the crown crisis. “I don’t expect there will be significant delays,” said the CDU politician. His ministry is in contact with the American electric car company. Nothing had changed in Tesla’s determination that plans for the plant at Grünheide, near Berlin, would continue. The prospect is for several thousand new jobs.
Meanwhile, Tesla has filed a third request for early approval of measures to prepare construction at the planned location, according to the Brandenburg state government. “This will essentially involve the shallow foundations of certain buildings and the laying of supply lines above the water table,” said Axel Steffen, head of the environment department at the environment ministry.
Tesla plans to manufacture around 500,000 electric cars a year in Grünheide since the summer of 2021. According to the ministry, the project received more than 370 objections. Among other things, Tesla plans to change the environmental approval request that has already been submitted. Whether the amended request should be reinterpreted in public depends on whether the environmental impact has deteriorated, Steffen said. However, there is no indication that a final approval will not be available later this year.
Critics see, among other things, the public drinking water supply at risk due to the settlement. However, the company wants to reduce consumption. A new appointment to discuss objections to the project is still open. The first date was canceled due to the crown crisis.
