Emergency vehicles run from the outskirts towards the center of the city, where, according to the Minister of the Interior, there has been an alleged terrorist attack. In District 1, Vienna’s historic city center, guests sit at bars and wait for the police to give them the green light to leave. The streets around Schwedenplatz, a lively mile of nightlife at a traffic junction on the Danube Canal where the first shots were fired, are lined with blue lights, and the entire district is cordoned off in one large area.

Immediately after the shooting, videos could be seen as bystanders ran in panic through pedestrian areas. According to journalists, some raised their arms to show the police that they were unarmed.

The police are calling on everyone in Vienna to stay home. The streets of the neighborhoods near the center of the city have been emptied, some pedestrians pass at greater speed. A few more guests are sitting in front of a bar a few streets out of town, almost everyone is looking at their smartphones.
