First the victory in the Paris Masters, now the triumph in the season finale: World number four Daniil Medvedev won the final in London with a lot of morale against US Open champion Dominic Thiem of Austria 4: 6, 7: 6 (7: 2), 6: 4 and celebrated the greatest success of his career.
Medvedev, 24, became the first player to beat world numbers one to three in the ATP Finals. In the preliminary round he defeated world number one Novak Djokovic, in the semifinals he eliminated Rafael Nadal before Thiem had to congratulate in the final. Only three players had managed to do this on the ATP tour, including Boris Becker in Stockholm in 1994. Medvedev finished the season with ten wins in a row: before the ATP Finals, he had already defeated German number one Alexander Zverev in the final in Paris. Hamburg had already failed in the London group stage.
Winner’s check for around 1.3 million euros
Thiem’s first service game lasted only ten minutes. Long rallies were developed, with a double fault from Medvedev Thiem gave the first break to 3: 2. The Austrian no longer gave up the advantage.
In the second set, too, both players were mostly at eye level, but only showed high-quality tennis on occasion. Thiem negligently left good chances for the preliminary decision, and Medvedev punished him in the tiebreaker.
In the decisive sentence, Thiem dodged three break balls. A little later he could not break free, Medvedev became stronger and stronger, the break to 3: 2 was for him. And since he showed no weakness after that, he secured the winner’s check for around 1.3 million euros.
