Take a closer look: Helios wants to create a database with the Covid record

The spread of the new Sars-CoV-2 virus poses major challenges for health systems worldwide. The researchers assume that the new corona virus will last longer and that we have to learn to live with it. Helios wants to provide important databases for the investigation of the new virus. Europe’s largest hospital operator creates a multi-center Helios Covid-19 national registry that coordinates 86 clinics of all levels of care.

Since February 2020, a team of Helios experts has been working with the support of the Brandenburg Medical School to collect and analyze pseudonymised data from Covid 19 patients in one registry. The goal is to gain knowledge on how to deal with the new virus. How does the disease develop in hospitalized patients? In what age group is the disease particularly common with severe symptoms? What previous illnesses have an impact on the Covid-19 course?

“There are no answers yet”

“The current spread of Sars-CoV-2 presents us with many questions, to which there are currently no answers because the virus is so new.” For this reason, it was particularly important for us not to waste time. The sooner we can get the first data out of the data, the better we can prepare for the virus and specifically protect vulnerable groups of people, “says Professor Dr. Andreas Meier Hellmann, Managing Director of Medicine at Helios.

“Statistical analysis of these clinical data provides new insights and provides important parameters for evidence-based modeling of the pandemic,” says Professor Dr. Michael Hauptmann, head of the Institute of Biometrics and Registration Research at the Faculty of Medicine of Brandenburg. Helios has access to a large network with different care structures, which can provide extensive knowledge of Covid 19 disease. The research project is scheduled for one year and is funded by Helios. The first scientific publications are in preparation and the data should be processed regularly in sequence.

Under the leadership of an interdisciplinary consortium of different subject areas, various scientific questions are addressed, including the course of disease and mortality, as well as treatment in different care structures. The registry should also be used to make comparisons with the clinical course in other countries.
