At a hearing of the suspect in the Maddie case before the Braunschweig regional court, the situation apparently escalated. Investigations into a possible assault are currently underway.

When putting the handcuffs on his ankles, Christian B., 43, suffered rib injuries. This was announced by the Braunschweig Regional Court. According to the authorities, the accused was “briefly treated at the hospital”, after which the hearing could continue. How the incident occurred, but the court did not provide further information as the incident was now part of the investigation.

Defense: “Bad treatment”

The defendant’s lawyer, Friedrich Fülscher, apparently sees the incident as less mild: he has brought criminal charges against judicial officials for assault. He told NDR 1 Lower Saxony that he was so violent that his client broke two ribs. He himself was involved in a very strong dispute with the court personnel and had to let this literally “bad thing” sink in. According to prosecutor Chrisitan Wolters, the process is currently in the hands of the police. The media also reported that the suspect should have struggled with the ankle cuffs and then two ribs had been broken. However, lawyer Fülscher does not confirm this.

The hearing took place anyway

The hearing, which did not address the case of Madeleine “Maddie” McCann, who disappeared in Portugal, was held anyway. The quote was about a prison sentence for drug trafficking, which B. is currently serving in Kiel. His lawyer had asked the Braunschweig Regional Court to suspend the remainder of the sentence because B. was registered here with his last place of residence. Until now, no one has been able to find out what came out of the hearing.

Release from prison is not expected

Even if the request is granted, the 43-year-old is not expected to be released. In this case, according to the judge’s spokeswoman, preventive detention should be applied in a case of rape. However, to do this, they would probably move it from Schleswig-Holstein to Lower Saxony. B. is said to have raped a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2005, about a year and a half before “Maddie” disappeared. For this he was sentenced to seven years in prison in December 2019. The 43-year-old has appealed to the Federal Court of Justice against this decision.

Suspicion of murder in the “Maddie” case

In early June, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Braunschweig prosecutor announced that they were investigating the missing “Maddie” against B., who had multiple criminal records, on suspicion of murder. More than 13 years ago, shortly before her fourth birthday, the girl disappeared in a holiday complex in Praia da Luz, Portugal; the case continues to cause a stir around the world.
