Survey on the risk of infection: “There is no greater risk in schools”

There was great concern that the reopened schools could become sources of corona infection after the summer break. But according to a survey by the publishing network Germany, so far it doesn’t look like this.

Schools as Crown Hot Spots? According to research by the German publishing network, there have been relatively few corona infections and quarantine measures in German schools so far. At the start of fall break, an average of 98 percent of all schoolchildren would have been able to participate in face-to-face classes, according to a survey conducted by state education ministries.

Consequently, about 0.04 percent of students in North Rhine-Westphalia, Schleswig-Holstein, and Bavaria were infected with the corona virus. In Berlin it was 0.07 percent. There were also relatively few quarantine measures. For example, in North Rhine-Westphalia on October 7, 98.1 percent of students were not affected by the quarantine. In Bavaria, about one percent of students were in quarantine on October 15.

“Brought from abroad”

“We made the observation that there is no increase or, compared to the rest of society, an increase in the infection rate in schools or nurseries,” Saarland Education Minister Christine Streichert-Clivot told the RND. “Infections occur predominantly outside of schools and kindergartens and are brought in from outside,” said the SPD politician.

Hamburg virologist Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit had a similar idea two weeks ago daily topics voiced. “Everything indicates that schools and nurseries are not the main sources of infection,” he said. “This is very good news and confirms the measures we have taken.”

Avoid closing schools again

Schools started the new school year with broad summer protection concepts, which, however, differ from state to state. Now it is important to prepare for winter in view of the increasing number of infections. Both education ministers and the federal government had repeatedly emphasized recently that school closings should be avoided across the board, such as in the spring. Open schools and nurseries have “top priority.”

And so, the situation of the crown was also on the agenda of the ministers of education, who came together for consultations yesterday and today. The Federal Environment Agency provided a brochure for all schools on the subject of ventilation. In recent days there had been a discussion about the cold, hats and scarves in the classroom. Experts recommend ventilating every 20 minutes to reduce the risk of infection.
