The Mexican comments on the end of Racing Point and the conversations with the racing team. In doing so, Pérez shows that not everything went optimally and explains his point of view.
Formula 1 driver Sergio Pérez said he was surprised that Sebastian Vettel receives his cockpit in the future Aston Martin racing team starting in 2021. “Everything seemed like the team wanted to keep me,” the 30-year-old Mexican said on Thursday in Mugello, Italy. But in the background recently there was talk of contracts, “about which I don’t want to say anything,” Pérez emphasized: “There were some things that we went through and yesterday they told me that I couldn’t go any further. I didn’t expect it, but now it is.”
Perez announced Wednesday night that he would be leaving Racing Point, as the team is still called this season, at the end of the year. On Thursday it was announced that four-time world champion Vettel would come to England after his contract with Ferrari expired. “It has nothing to do with my performance, there was only one other driver,” said Pérez. Co-founder Lawrence Stroll called him on Wednesday and said the racing team would like to orient itself “in a different direction” going forward.
At Aston Martin, Sebastian Vettel will drive alongside Stroll’s son Lance (21) in the future. “It is an exciting challenge, he has an incredible experience and he is a very successful driver,” Stroll Junior said of his new stable rival. Meanwhile, Pérez wants to try to find accommodation with another Formula 1 team. “I am young and hungry, but it has to be the right package,” he said.
