The CDU candidate, Frank Nopper, won the mayoral election in Stuttgart. The 59-year-old received 42.3 percent of the votes in the second ballot, as announced by the city. Nopper is the successor to the green politician Fritz Kuhn, who is no longer running.

Nopper prevailed against Marian Schreier, who ran as an independent candidate and received 36.9 percent of the vote. Third place went to Stuttgart city councilor Hannes Rockenbauch of the SÖS / Left Party alliance, receiving 17.8 percent of the vote.

A total of 450,000 people were eligible to vote. The turnout was 44.7 percent. On the second ballot, the applicant with the most votes won because neither candidate obtained an absolute majority on the first ballot.

The Greens’ candidate was no longer on the ballot in the second ballot: After a disappointing performance in the first round and unsuccessful discussions with the other center-left field hopefuls, Veronika Kienzle withdrew her candidacy.

Kuhn, 65, did not want to run again after eight years at the top of the city hall. Backnang Mayor Nopper was his successor’s favorite.
