For six hours, the attackers fired at the university campus in the Afghan capital. They kill and injure numerous people before being killed by the security forces. The Islamic State is committed to the attack, which is causing horror around the world.
The terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) claimed the attack on the facilities of the University of Kabul with at least 22 dead. Two IS fighters stormed the campus during a graduation ceremony, the group said in an Internet message from IS Amak spokesperson. The event celebrated the realization of a training course in which several judges participated, among others.
ISIS said on the news 80 dead and wounded. According to official information, at least 22 people were killed in the attack, including the attackers. Unlike ISIS, the Afghan Interior Ministry spoke of three perpetrators. At least 22 other people were injured.
The radical Islamic Taliban declined responsibility for the attack. According to the Education Ministry, a government delegation was expected to open an Iranian book fair on campus this Monday.
According to the Interior Ministry, the gunmen stormed the area and fought a six-hour firefight with elite Afghan units. They were later killed by the security forces. Just over a week ago there was an attack on an educational center in Kabul, which killed 24 people. ISIS also claimed this attack for itself.
One killer sets off a bomb, others shoot
According to the Interior Ministry, three attackers stormed the university campus in the morning. First, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device, then two gunmen opened fire on campus. Most of those killed were reportedly students. Hundreds fled and jumped over the walls of the university campus.
Fraidun Ahmadi, 23, reported that he was at a conference when he heard the first shots. “We were very scared and we thought the last day of our lives had come,” he said. “The boys and girls screamed, prayed and asked for help.” The bodies of the murdered students were seen in pools of blood next to tables and chairs in shocking images on online networks. Only after several hours, the security forces supported by US soldiers managed to control the situation.
The UN and the EU condemn the attack
The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, condemned the fatal attack on the university campus. The attack was “terrible” and also an attack on the human right to education, Guterres said, according to the statement. Those responsible would have to be held accountable. The UN chief expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery. The United Nations stood by the Afghan people and their government to help them in their long-awaited quest for peace.
The EU also condemned the attack. It is already the second attack on educational institutions in Kabul in less than 10 days, said a spokesman for the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell. These are not just targeted attacks on young and innocent civilians, but “attacks on the future of Afghanistan.”
