New times for German motorists: As of Tuesday, the new fine catalog applies nationwide, significantly increasing penalties. The risk of losing your license is now much higher.

In urban areas, from 21 km / h (instead of 31 km / h) too much, there is a risk of losing the driving license. Strong criticism is now hailing:

► FDP traffic expert Oliver Luksic (40) misses “Maß und Mitte”: A driving ban is threatened for a month if you get caught too fast at 26 km / h out of town. That is “excessive”.

► The Mobil association in Germany calls the amendment “driver’s license destruction machine”.

► Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (45, CSU) opposes this. He says: “The new rules strengthen weaker road users in particular.”

The fact is: Despite the decline in the number of traffic deaths over the decades, increasing fines are imposed and Flensburg points are distributed. The number of registered traffic offenders has recently increased from 8.5 million (2016) to more than 11 million (2019).

Some examples of the new rules.

► Anyone driving illegally through a rescue alley for emergency vehicles in traffic jams can be punished with a fine of up to 320 euros, a one-month driving ban and two points on the driving suitability record, that is, in “Flensburg”.

► Stopping on road bike protection strips is no longer allowed; otherwise, there is a penalty of up to 100 euros and one point.

► Unauthorized use of sidewalks, bicycle lanes on the left and hard shoulder is punished, instead of up to 25 euros, with a fine of up to 100 euros.

► In the future, anyone who exceeds bicycles will have to maintain a distance of at least 1.5 meters in the village, 2 meters outside the city, until now only “sufficient lateral space” was required.

► There are also stricter rules for parking at confusing intersections. Parking spaces for electronic cars and carpools can be more easily identified.
