A storm surge has hit the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Water levels in many coastal cities are more than one meter above normal. The climax is expected at night.

Due to rising water levels in coastal waters, the Vorpommern-Greifswald district has now activated alert level 2. The recommendation came from the West Pomerania State Office of Agriculture and Environment (StALU), a spokesperson announced. In the second of the four alarm levels, the levees should be checked for possible damage and, if necessary, sealed with sandbags. In Wismar, sirens sounded at high tide in the harbor area, as a spokesman for the Hanseatic city said. A water level of more than 1.30 meters had been reached. However, the water has not yet spilled over the edge of the pier. However, a street was closed due to flooding.

Usedom: Burst at 122 kilometers per hour – waves five meters high

Water levels of up to 1.1 meters above mean water level are expected along the entire Baltic Sea coast. In the Bay of Lübeck, water levels of up to 1.3 meters above the mean water level are possible. The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency has issued a storm surge warning: “It will be violent,” said meteorologist Stefan Kreibohm of the NDR weather survey in Hiddensee. Kreibohm said in particular for the Greifswalder Bodden that it would go “wild” there with gusts of up to 10 or 11 wind force and northeast wind direction. In the afternoon, the water level rose to almost 1.4 meters above normal. In Stralsund it was about 1.2 meters above normal. At Karlshagen, Usedom, a hurricane gust with a wind speed of 122 km / h was measured at noon. “Now we have wave heights in the Baltic Sea of ​​around five meters. The kitesurfers in Mukran have a lot of fun,” Kreibohm said. At Zempin, at the narrowest point of Usedom, parts of the dune were ripped away by the flood.

Limited ferry traffic, downed trees

The bombing in Greifswald was closed as a precautionary measure. In the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, the rescue control center reported around 60 trees downed in the afternoon. On Rügen, the roads near Serams and Middelhagen had to be closed. In Wismar, the fire brigade provided sandbags. The Wolgast Zoo was closed due to the storm. For this reason, ferry traffic between Hiddensee and Schaprode and between Hiddensee and Stralsund was largely canceled. Currently only operates the motor ferry between Vitte and Schaprode. In some parts of West Pomerania the electricity was cut, probably due to the storm. In the Anklam area in particular, reports are increasing, for example from Ducherow, Bugewitz, Mönkebude and Klein Bünzow.
