Röttgen calls CDU election results “wake-up call”
CDU politician Norbert Röttgen expressed concern about the state of the party after the fall of the Christian Democrats in state elections. “The results of the CDU in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate are a wake-up call for the entire CDU,” said Röttgen of the “Rheinische Post” in Düsseldorf. “Time is essential, but there is still time to take concrete measures,” emphasized the member of the CDU executive committee.
If the CDU is at the top or in the middle of 20 percent in its former home countries, “then it is also due to the popularity of the incumbent, but that alone does not represent such election results,” Röttgen said. “It would be a serious mistake to deceive us,” he added: “The CDU as a whole has to take countermeasures.”
The CDU must now address three issues, Röttgen said. As a first point, he mentioned that it must be presented “quickly and reliably”, “that and how vaccination and tests are part of our strategy to combat pandemics.” In addition, the CDU must fully clarify the mask matter and draw conclusions from it.
“And the CDU must formulate our programmatic exit for the issues other than Corona and for the time after the pandemic,” said Röttgen, who had entered the race for the top of the CDU against Armin Laschet and Friedrich Merz. In January, Laschet beat out his two competitors.
