It was relatively close, but it was enough for the ruling mayor of Berlin: According to information from SPIEGEL, the majority of the members of the SPD electoral district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf voted for Michael Müller as a candidate for the Bundestag. In the internal poll, he prevailed with 58.4 percent over his Secretary of State, Sawsan Chebli, who obtained 40.2 percent of the vote.

2,459 members of the SPD were called to participate in the decision. The turnout was 59.2 percent.

The head of government is running in Berlin’s Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf constituency for the SPD in the 2021 federal elections. In early January, Müller had announced that he wanted to hand over the state presidency to Family Minister Franziska Giffey and the leader of the parliamentary group Raed Saleh. Giffey should also run as one of the top candidates in the House of Representatives elections next year.

The ruling mayor represents the former SPD. Müller has done a classic ox tour, been a Social Democrat for 39 years, and been a politician in Berlin since 1989. He has likely been chosen by many long-term members who record exactly how many barbecues and evening events an applicant appears at.

Chebli, on the other hand, represents a new progressive SPD. The Secretary of State was born in Berlin in 1978 to Palestinian parents. She was a research assistant in the Bundestag and deputy spokesperson for the then Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. In 2016, Müller took her to the Senate Chancellery, as the Berlin State representative at the federal level and State Secretary for Civic Engagement and International Affairs.

The Social Democrat is committed to refugees and against racism. It is present in social networks and is considered a polarizing and argumentative policy.
