The ruling mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, must face a poll of members in the SPD district association Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf on the way to a Bundestag run. The board of directors of the district association unanimously decided in the evening to allow all members to vote for the Bundestag candidate. District President Christian Gaebler announced. After the vote, the candidate will be elected at a constituency conference in November.

A month ago, Müller announced that he would move to the Bundestag in 2021 and stand for election in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf constituency. He has to fight competition within the party: Secretary of State for Civic Engagement Sawsan Chebli, who brought Müller to the Senate Chancellery in 2016, also wants to run.

The decision of who the district SPD association will send to in the fall 2021 elections will now be made by the members. Your vote is not formally binding. In practice, however, it is certain that the candidate ahead of the poll will be chosen.

Chebli evaluated the decision to conduct a member survey as positive. This strengthens the candidate and ensures “that the circle can enter the electoral campaign as a whole,” he told the dpa news agency. “In this way we can mobilize the members for the election campaign beforehand and confront the political opponent in unity and win the Bundestag mandate for the SPD.”

Whoever wins within the party: The direct mandate of the SPD candidate is not secure. More recently, the CDU triumphed in the constituency.
