At least 49 people were injured in a nighttime fire at a 33-story skyscraper in the South Korean city of Ulsan. As the national Yonhap news agency reported, citing rescuers, most of those affected had inhaled smoke.

Images on South Korean television showed on Friday night (local time) how an entire side of the building was on fire. It was not initially clear if the fire in the metropolis in the southeast of the country resulted in deaths.

The residents apparently fled to the roof.

According to Yonhap, the fire was largely brought under control after a few hours, but the situation in the commercial and residential building was still unclear around two in the morning. Some 50 people had fled to the top or roof of the building to save themselves. According to the US station ABC, people were also taken from there.

The fire broke out around 11 p.m. Thursday between the eighth and twelfth floors and then quickly spread upward, he said. Strong winds reportedly fanned it. The videos that circulated on the short message service Twitter could be seen as burning parts fell from the house. It was unclear if there was an acute risk of collapse from the fire.

According to the BBC, around 120 households live in the building and there are also shops. Initially, it was not known how many people were in the building at the time of the accident.
